Barb's Best Buttercream Icing
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 C. shortening
  • 1/2 C. softened butter or margarine
  • 4 C. powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
Directions:
  1. Beat shortening and butter or margarine for a few minutes in a mixer. This puts some air in the fat and lightens the color of the frosting.
  2. Add 2 cups of powdered sugar and beat on high for about 2 minutes.
  3. Add remaining powdered sugar. At this point the frosting is going to be pretty thick.
  4. Add a tablespoon of milk and beat. I it's still too thick add another tablespoon of milk.
  5. Add vanilla and beat until light and fluffy. If at this point it's still a little thick add a little more milk. Don't add all the milk at once because it might get too thin. Frosting fluctuates by the weather. Some days you need more milk and some days you need less milk. Remember you can always add, but you can't take it away once you've added it.
